Integrative Narrative
When I was a little girl, I had the opportunity to spend a lot of time with a teacher and she told me how much she liked her profession. She told me that every student she knew was a world like books. She told me that I had to read; books, stories, poems, magazines or whatever but read... When she told me her stories I thought "I want to be a teacher and know a lot like her".
One day my life took a 360 degree turn. I had to leave my hometown to move to the United States. When I arrived at Salinas California, a new world opened for me. People from different places, different cultures, different languages were around me, at the moment I notice that many other places, many languages, cultures, religion exist and the only place I knew was Oaxaca and I only language I knew was Spanish. The first months were very difficult, I could not adapt everything seemed to different, I felt very bad because I did not know English and I felt even worse for knowing Spanish. Over time my life was changing, I began to appreciate the changes. I realized that I had the opportunity to know and learning different things.
Throughout my education I realized how important Spanish was in my life and I decided to study something with Spanish, but I did not know what. I was advised and told that I could study Spanish and teach it. I was able to do two of the things that I liked the most, together, so I decided that I would study Spanish and culture language major at CSUMB. Now I realize that I could not have chosen a better career. I have learned so much not only from my culture but also from the culture around the world. The stories, poems, novels, dramas have helped me a lot to know other countries, other customs, other religions, etc. This career has taught me that one of the many doors for other worlds is literature. The linguistics classes have helped me a lot to improve my vocabulary, write correctly and see what unifies Spanish. One of the most important classes was community service, throughout this class I had the opportunity to know a little more about our Latino community and see what they lack of, it made me see that our society needs a lot of help.
My goal still intact. I want to be a teacher and teach in Spanish, to show people that it is not just a way to communicate. That is Spanish is culture, it is religion, it is custom that Spanish is not just a simple language.
I feel very proud to be able to finish my career and be able to finish my Capstone project. This project has been a very intense path. It's not just a written work, it's research, team work, sleepless nights, stress days, but above all its pride. Finishing this project and my career make me feel proud because I growth a lot during the process.
My learning was formed by each of the teachers, classmates and classes I took in CSUMB, I expanded my knowledge, but also my need to help our Latino community. In the future I would like to find a job that allows me to advise and help all those Latinos who only speak Spanish and who have been discriminated against because of that.
