Course Reflection SPAN 301s
The SPAN 301s class I think was one of my favorites. Thanks to this class I had the opportunity to know a little more about the Latino community and connect with some authors that we studied in class. We studied Sonia Nieto, Gary Soto, Josué González, Sandra Cisneros etc. But the most interesting part of the class was being in contact with the community. We had to serve an institution for thirty hours. I decided to serve the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Academy Elementary school in Salinas. Here I was working with kindergarten students, it was a very pleasant experience. Their program was bilingual so Spanish was the language we most talked in the classroom. I learned a lot during those thirty hours. Being in contact with the children taught me a little more about the way they are educated, I learned about some school needs. The problems faced by children, parents and teachers due to lack of understanding and communication. I think we live in a very individualistic system in which it is hard for us to help people and that is reflected in the schools. There are people who for lack of knowledge feel underrated. My service to the community helped me a lot to realize the problems of my community. I would like to work hard to see a positive change in the Latino community.
Here is my presentation that I made for my service learning class.
